A productivity app with no sign-up or account
What "no account" means in FocusOS, without the small print.
Nothing to sign up for
FocusOS is a free productivity app you can use with no sign-up. Most focus and app blocker tools begin with a sign-up, then keep your habits on their servers. FocusOS has no account, sign-in, email address, subscription or profile. You download it and start a session. There's nothing to log in to, so there's nothing to lose in a breach.
Where your things are
- Your sessions, goals, plans and notes are ordinary files on your own device. You can read them, back them up or delete them. We can't see them, and we can't recover them.
- Webcam pictures, if you leave the webcam on, are checked and thrown away. They're never saved or sent.
- The list of what's open on your computer is read on your computer and stays there.
- Your browser tabs, if you add the add-on, go only to FocusOS on your own computer.
What does go online
We'd rather say this than have you find it:
- If you press Get a key for the phone lock, the key and the time left are stored in the cloud so your phone can follow the session. That's deleted afterwards, and it contains nothing about who you are. If you don't press it, nothing goes online.
- Checking for updates and downloading files are ordinary web requests, which our host logs like any website.
- The download button adds one to a public count, which is a single number.
What there isn't
No analytics, no advertising, no tracking cookies, no paid tier, and no data for sale. It isn't an AI service either: nothing you type goes to a chatbot.
The trade-off
With no account, nothing syncs. Your history stays on the computer it happened on, and if you lose that computer without a backup, it's gone. We think that's a fair price.
